Another commission from the sister; a wedding present in fact! The brief was to make a “chunky” bed, and so I put together a model on the computer and played around with ideas. Ash was chosen as it is good to work with, attractive, strong and stable. Traditional mortice and tenon joinery was used throughout, and the result is a bed that would probably withstand a natural disaster. The finish is a high quality satin varnish produced by Mark Finney, based just outside Sheffield. It’s also very easy to take apart, with custom made “knock-down” fittings at each end of the long lengths.
Making this bed became a race against time, as the wedding drew closer and I remember spending one particular week in the workshop until 9pm every night trying to get it finished. As always a project of this scale takes a LOT longer than expected!
The result was very well received and should be stuck in the family line for a few generations!
